Teaching is all about finding ways to blend academic standards with the real world. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity for students to apply the writing process to make a meaningful gift for mom.

Getting Started – Brainstorming About Mom

This activity begins by having students brainstorm about their mother. Students use a web graphic organizer to generate ideas about what makes their mother awesome. Typically, I model this using an anchor chart to generate ideas about my mom.

After I’ve generated a few ideas, I ask the students to think about the types of things I recorded. We talk about what they notice, often making connections to their own mom.

The goal of this group analysis is to guide students toward generating specific ideas vs. generalities. I want their ideas to be things that could not apply to just anyone’s mom.

I also try to provide a few examples and non-examples to help students see the difference. For example, I might write “My mom packs my lunch every day.” With the help of the class, we might work to make that more specific and transform it into something like, “My mom packs me my favorite peanut butter and banana sandwiches in my lunchbox.”

Once students understand the goal of generating unique, specific details about what makes their mom special, I give them their graphic organizers and allow them to begin thinking about their own ideas.

Create the World’s Best Mom Ribbon

As students finish up their brainstorming, I ask them to identify 2-3 main points they want to include. Once these have been identified, I give students the ribbon template.

Students then write a paragraph (or a couple sentences) describing why they mom is the World’s Best Mom. They use the reasons from their graphic organizer to support their writing.

Younger learners may need modeling of how to construct the paragraph and may benefit from sentences stems. For my struggling writers, I often create a model topic sentence and conclusion to help support their paragraph construction.

When students finish writing, they color and cut their ribbon out. They then glue the round cover piece to the ribbon. This creates a flap that can be lifted to reveal the paragraph.

Optional World’s Best Mom Writing Assignment

For older students, you may want to expand the writing piece and have students write a paragraph about each of the main points they select from their graphic organizer. Decorative writing paper is provided to create a beautiful display piece.
